02Kurz gesagtIn short
Everything stays on your device – or goes from there straight to the services you use as a student anyway.
- RMI has no server of its own. The apps send me no data – not your login, your mail, your grades, your ticket or your timetable. (Crash reports passed on by Apple or Google: section 10.)
- No tracking, no analytics tools, no ads, no crash-reporting service.
- Your LoginID and password are kept in the Keychain (iOS) or encrypted with a key from the Android Keystore. They go only to the RUB services you sign in to.
- The app connects directly to these services, mainly RUB, the University Library, the RIDE ticket portal, AKAFÖ’s meal plan and the AStA. Section 4 lists exactly which ones and what they receive.
- Notifications are created on your device; there is no push server.
- This website sets no cookies and loads nothing from other servers. Only your language choice is saved, locally in your browser.
03Was die Apps verarbeiten und wo es liegtWhat the apps process and where it is stored
RMI selbst sendet dabei nichts an Apple.
RMI shows you data from your university services. The app loads it straight onto your device and stores it there, in the app’s own storage, so it is fast and also available offline. The app stores data on your device only. The exceptions are your own backups and the calendar export, both described below. What you send to a service through the app, such as an email or a draft, is stored by that service (section 4).
- Your RUB LoginID and password. iOS: in the Keychain, tied to this device; they are never synced and never moved to another device, not even through a backup. Android: encrypted (AES-256-GCM) with a key in the Android Keystore, excluded from cloud backup and device transfer.
- Name
- Your first and last name, shown in the app. The app reads it from your user page on the RUB website; on iOS, failing that, from the library sign-in, the ticket or Moodle.
- Matriculation number
- Android: read once from your Moodle profile, the first time you want to book a library course that asks for it; stored encrypted like the login and used only to prefill such bookings. iOS: only if you type it in yourself for such a booking; the app does not store it.
- Folder list, headers (up to 300 per folder), up to 200 messages, your own address and downloaded attachments; on iOS also the senders for whom you allowed external images. The mail cache is excluded from backups.
- Semester ticket
- All details on the ticket, including name, date of birth, validity, area and issue date, plus the Aztec code and, if available, a Google Wallet link. Excluded from backups; on iOS also protected by the system’s file protection.
- Library
- Your library card barcode, loans, hold requests, fees, blocks, messages, UB courses and your bookings; the library access token (iOS in the Keychain until it expires, Android in memory only) and a randomly generated device ID for this installation.
- Moodle
- Courses, deadlines, notifications, course content, forum posts (with names, pictures and profile details of other participants), assignments, feedback and grades, downloaded course files and pictures, and your Moodle settings in the app.
- Timetable
- Courses, sessions, rooms, lecturers, links, notes, exams, homework with text, photos, files and reminders (including homework taken over from Moodle deadlines), books, and plan suggestions (exam dates, texts of Moodle announcements, group choices). On iOS, widgets, the Live Activity and Siri read this data from a storage area shared within the app.
- Course catalogue
- Cached pages, your bookmarks and your recent searches.
- Canteen
- Canteens and menus plus your settings: selected and pinned canteens, diet and allergen filters, favourite dishes and price group. Only the ID of the canteen whose menu is loaded goes to the meal-plan service; the app applies filters, favourite dishes and price group on the device.
- News
- Cached articles and pictures plus your settings (subscriptions, image loading).
- Settings
- Appearance, font, cards on the app’s start page, accessibility, emergency display, quiet hours, your role (student or staff) and which events you exported to the calendar.
- Lock screen and widgets
- On iOS a Live Activity shows the title, short name, room and time of the current or next lecture on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island; there are also widgets for the next lecture and the canteen. On Android there is a home screen widget and a ticket shortcut. All of it is created locally, without a push service.
Backups
Depending on your device settings, parts of this data end up in your own backups:
- iOS (iCloud or computer backup): the login stays tied to this device; the ticket, the mail cache and Moodle downloads are excluded. Included are, among other things, your name, the library data, cached Moodle pages, the timetable with homework photos, and VVZ and canteen data.
- Android (automatic backup to your Google account): the login, matriculation number, name, mail, ticket, library data and cached Moodle pages and files are excluded. Included are, among other things, the timetable with photos and files, canteen and news data, VVZ bookmarks and recently viewed courses, the app’s settings (including those for Moodle) and the library device ID.
Apple or Google manage these backups for you. I have no access to them.
Calendar export
Only if you use it does the app add your sessions to a calendar. On iOS you tap to export the next six months of sessions to your default calendar; if that is an iCloud, Google or Exchange calendar, the events are synced with that provider. Alternatively you can create a calendar file (.ics) and pass it on yourself. On Android you turn the sync on; the app then creates its own local calendar, “RUB Stundenplan”, which is not synced.
Siri and Shortcuts (iOS)
If you ask Siri about your next lecture or today’s canteen menu, the app builds the answer on the device; Apple’s Siri then presents it. RMI itself sends nothing to Apple. Only if no menu is stored yet for the canteen question does the app load it from AKAFÖ’s meal-plan service (section 4).
Logs
The apps write diagnostic messages only locally on the device, never with login data, and send them nowhere.

Inhalte von anderen ServernContent from other servers
- Pictures in news articles are mostly hosted by RUB or the AStA but may also come from other servers. The app loads them depending on your image setting (always, Wi-Fi only or never); the server receives your IP address and user agent.
- Pictures in Moodle texts that lecturers or other participants embedded may come from any server. The app loads them without cookies, depending on your Moodle image setting (always, Wi-Fi only or never).
- If the app does not load a picture from the news or Moodle automatically, it may ask that server for the file size to show it on the load button. Here too the server receives your IP address and user agent.
- External content in mail, such as images, is blocked by default, which also protects you from tracking pixels. If you allow it, the sender’s servers learn your IP address and that you opened the mail. On iOS the app remembers this permission per sender.
- Links, for example to eCampus, university sports, the service portal, webmail, akafoe.de or Zoom, open in your browser or the matching app. RMI itself sends nothing; the terms of that site apply.
05RechtsgrundlagenLegal bases
- Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR for everything needed to provide the features you use or turn on in the app: sign-in, mail, Moodle, ticket, library, timetable, VVZ, canteen, news, notifications, calendar export, external content in mail and Google Wallet.
- Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR where the app refreshes data ahead of time – in the background or when you open the app – so it is current and available offline, for crash reports that Apple or Google pass on to me (section 10), and for the access data on the server of this website (section 11). My legitimate interest is a reliable, up-to-date and bug-free app and a securely delivered website.
- Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG (German Telecommunications Digital Services Data Protection Act) for saving your language choice in the browser, because this is strictly necessary for the function you chose.
You don’t have to provide any data. Without a RUB account you can use RMI as a guest, for example for the canteen, and try the demo mode on iOS. For mail, Moodle, ticket and library the app needs your RUB login.

RMI asks for a permission only when you use a feature that needs it. You can revoke any permission at any time in the system settings.
- Notifications
- For local notifications (section 7). The app asks when you turn a notification on or first open an area whose notifications are on by default (mail on Android, Moodle on iOS).
- Calendar
- For the calendar export, only once you use it. iOS: write-only access – the app can add events but cannot read your calendar. Android: read and write access to keep its own “RUB Stundenplan” calendar in sync.
- Add to Photos (iOS)
- Only to save pictures from Moodle and news to your photo library via the share menu (“Bild sichern”, save image). The app cannot read your photos with it.
- Picking photos and files
- Through the system picker; the app receives only what you select (for homework, books and mail attachments). No permission is needed for this.
- Camera (Android)
- For homework photos the app opens the system camera app. RMI itself has no camera permission.
- Background refresh
- So the app can check for new mail, Moodle content and menus in the background and prepare reminders, on iOS also the ticket, on Android also news (iOS: Background App Refresh, Android: WorkManager). You can limit this in the system settings.
- Live Activities (iOS)
- The current or next lecture on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island, plus the progress while loading the VVZ. Started locally, without push.
- Network (Android)
- For all connections and to check whether Wi-Fi is available (for Wi-Fi-only pictures and downloads).
RMI uses no location, contacts, microphone, Bluetooth, app tracking or server push notifications.
07BenachrichtigungenNotifications
- Neue Inhalte in Moodle.
All notifications are local: the app checks the services itself and creates the notification on your device. There is no push server – neither Apple’s push service nor Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging – and your device is not registered anywhere for notifications.
- New mail, with sender, subject and a preview. The “Gelesen” (read) action marks the mail as read on the mail server.
- New content in Moodle.
- Your favourite dish on the menu.
- Reminders and a daily overview from your timetable (sessions, deadlines, exams), on iOS with an “Erledigt” (done) action for deadlines.
- News (Android).
You turn notifications on or off one by one in the app (new mail and Moodle content are on by default) and off entirely in the system settings, where you also decide whether their content appears on the lock screen. When you sign out, the app removes mail notifications that were already delivered.
08Demo-Modus (iOS)Demo mode (iOS)
On iOS you can try RMI without a RUB account: via “Demo ansehen” (view demo) or with the public demo login (LoginID demo, password rmi-demo).
- Timetable, mail, Moodle, ticket, library and VVZ show made-up sample data (profile “Alex Demo”). The ticket is generated on the device and is not a valid ticket.
- The app signs in to no service and stores no password. It blocks connections to RUB servers and to RIDE, except RUB News.
- RUB News, AStA news, menus, canteen photos and pictures in articles still load live – with the connection data described in section 4 (IP address, user agent).
- Starting the demo deletes any real login previously stored on the device.
- “Demo beenden” (end demo) deletes all demo data.
The Android app has no demo mode.
09Speicherdauer und LöschungStorage period and deletion
Abmelden
Beim Abmelden löscht die App:
- LoginID, Passwort, Name und, falls gespeichert, die Matrikelnummer;
- Mails, Anhänge und bereits zugestellte Mail-Benachrichtigungen;
- Moodle-Sitzung, -Seiten, -Dateien und -Bilder;
- das Semesterticket (auf Android auch die Verknüpfung dazu);
What RMI stores stays on your device until you delete it, sign out or uninstall the app. The app cleans up its caches itself: the mail cache is limited in size, menus older than the previous week are removed, the ticket is replaced on every fetch, and the library access token is valid only until it expires.
Signing out
When you sign out, the app deletes:
- your LoginID, password, name and, if stored, your matriculation number;
- mail, attachments and mail notifications already delivered;
- the Moodle session, pages, files and pictures;
- the semester ticket (on Android also its shortcut);
- library data and the library access token.
On Android it also stops the background checks for mail and Moodle.
Kept are: your timetable with homework (including homework taken over from Moodle), plan suggestions (including texts from Moodle announcements), VVZ bookmarks and searches, canteen and news data with their settings, the app settings, the library device ID and events you already exported to the calendar. On Android, the Moodle settings (such as collapsed sections and offline courses) are also kept, and possibly the session cookie of the built-in Moodle view, until the session expires or the next sign-in for the ticket or library deletes it. You can delete timetable entries and VVZ bookmarks in the app; everything else goes when you uninstall the app.
Uninstalling
When you uninstall the app, the system removes its data from your device. Exceptions:
- iOS: Keychain entries (login, library token) usually remain. After reinstalling, RMI may then be signed in again. Sign out before uninstalling if you don’t want that.
- iOS: events exported to your calendar stay there until you delete them yourself.
- Android: the app removes the “RUB Stundenplan” calendar when you turn the sync off. Do this before uninstalling to make sure it goes away.
- Copies in your backups (iCloud, computer, Google account) remain according to their rules and may be restored when you reinstall.
In short: to remove everything, sign out in the app, turn off the calendar sync on Android (on iOS, delete exported events in your calendar yourself), then uninstall the app.
10App Store und Google PlayApp Store and Google Play
If you get RMI from the App Store, TestFlight or Google Play, Apple or Google process data, such as data about your account and the download, as independent controllers under their own privacy policies, possibly also outside the EU, for example in the USA. I have no influence on this.
If you agreed in your device settings to share analytics and crash data with app developers, I may receive crash reports and aggregated statistics from Apple or Google. Through TestFlight, feedback and crash reports that you send yourself as a tester may also reach me. I use them only to find and fix bugs.

- No requests to other servers: the font (Archivo), scripts, styles and images come from the same server as the page. There is no embedded content from other providers, such as maps or videos.
- Language choice: when you switch between DE and EN, the page saves your choice in your browser’s
localStorageunder the keyrmi-lang(valuedeoren). Without a saved choice, the language follows your browser’s language setting; only your browser evaluates this, nothing is transmitted. The entry stays until you clear the site data in your browser. - The copy buttons only put the demo login on your clipboard.
- Links to other sites, such as GitHub or Creative Commons, load only when you click them. The terms of those sites then apply.
Server log files
When you visit this website, the web server hosting it may process technically necessary access data and store it in log files: your IP address, date and time, the requested address (URL) and your browser’s identifier (user agent). This is needed to deliver the pages and to keep the service secure. The same applies when you download files from here. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest lies in technically delivering the website and keeping it secure.
The website runs on a server I rent from 1blu AG in Germany and operate myself (nginx web server). 1blu processes the data only on my behalf (Art. 28 GDPR). The data does not leave the EU.
